The Teen Years
Maybe I’m only speaking for myself, but I think the drawings an artist makes between the ages of about 13 and 18 are likely to be the lamest of their career. It’s the awkward time in between the naive profundity of childhood scribbles and the developed skills of later. I kept my dorky teenage doodles in a folder for years until recently when I decided to collage them all together onto a canvas. A lot of this was drawn in math and Spanish classes when I should have been taking notes.

The Far Out World
Last week I was visiting my dad and he’s got this giant drawing I made when I was 17 hanging on the wall by the laundry room. It took me five months to draw it, and it’s amusing to look at now. Like a ‘Where’s Waldo’ of sci-fi weirdness, classic-rock worship, and political and environmental metaphors so blunt they could only come from the mind of suburban teenager. But it’s inspired me to see what I can do with a giant piece of paper again!
PS: The pooch is Kippy.

Adding Japanese text to any drawing makes it seem more artistic. It also makes you feel cooler, like you have “a following” over there. It’s a fact.
This is a poster for a museum retrospective of my childhood scribbles exhibiting next month in Tokyo.
Nevermind that it’s not really happening… my ego got boosted just looking at it!

President George H.W. Bush Puking (1992)
Does anyone remember that time the first President Bush threw up all over the prime minister of Japan? That very night I immortalized the incident by drawing this cartoon on my father’s PC computer. (Look at those early-90’s pattern fills and the dot matrix printer!)
Here’s footage of it on Youtube. It’s kinda weird how the whole room applauds him when he’s done puking.
