IVYBETTY: In my circle we call people who spend a lot of time on the web “web junkies”. I can’t make any assumptions about how much time you spend on the web but after checking your website I can definitely assume you get a lot of inspiration from the web. So I have to ask where/when did this “web-inspired” work start?
DAN METH: I cannot pretend it’s not true. I am definitely a web junkie. For the last decade I’ve spent my days on the web, made a living off knowing how it works and making things for people to watch on it. And it’s increasingly how I (and everyone else) gets entertainment, knowledge, communication, and certainly inspiration. I’m not sure exactly when my work became knowingly inspired BY the web, but I guess my first cartoon about the internet was 2007’s “Internet People” which kicked off my Meth Minute series in a big way.
IB: Judging from your body of work, your sense of humor seems to drive your work as an artist. Would you agree with that assumption?
DM: I would. Injecting humor into my work is very natural to me and I don’t have much interest in making serious stuff (yet… maybe someday). I’ve always thought that when you make comedy it’s much easier to judge whether or not the work was successful. If a lot of people laugh, you know you did it right.
IB: What else do you draw inspiration from?
DM: I don’t watch too much animation, which surprises people. While I am a huge movie buff, my Netflix queue has very little animation on it. I read a lot of non-fiction and am becoming a history nut like my dad. Watching and listening to people always gives you ideas. Living in NYC is great for inspiration because you can’t avoid the millions of strangers and their dramas all around you. Just being an eavesdropping smartass on the subway is research for cartoons.
IB: I was also able to spend some time viewing your film work. Your videos are very interesting. Do you create the films solo or do you collaborate with a team?
DM: I mostly work solo but sometimes have collaborators. When there’s enough of a budget for a project I’ve hired assistant animators. The biggest team I’ve had was about 4 or 5 people working on a show called “Nite Fite”. But mostly it’s just me. I consider my voice actors to be collaborators in a way because I encourage them to improvise and often there’s no script.
IB: What equipment did you use for film/animation?
DM: I use everything! Paper, pencils, IMacs, Cintics, digital cameras, clay, and even watermelons.
IB: How long have you been expressing yourself artistically and professionally?
DM: My parents say that by the age of two I was pretty comfortable at utilizing crayons. It’s been non-stop since then. I wasn’t interested in much else, so I had very little choice but to try to do it professionally. (Here’s some funny drawings I made as a kid)
IB: Where can more of your work be found?
DM: You can find the occasional illustration of mine in various printed zines and magazines. I am part of an annual anthology called Mammal Magazine and I’m also working on a comic book for Traditional Comics. In the future I hope to have some more tangible work maybe in a gallery or as a mural. There’s a whole non-digital world for art, which I often neglect.
IB: You update your website quite often, especially considering its all original content. How do you stay inspired and have you always been this way creatively?
DM: As a rule, I post something on my website every weekday. It keeps me from slowing down and getting lazy. I generally don’t TRY to think up new ideas…. instead I just keep my mind and eyes open and the ideas will come into my brain when I least expect it. In college, I had a comic strip in the school paper almost every day and that was alot like a blog. It forced me to keep churning out entertainment and gags for the masses.
L Magazine’s Northside Festival is having a “Best of NYC Animation” film fest on Friday June 25th, in cooperation with Animation Block Party. They’ll be showing some of my cartoons there, along with Odd Todd, Lisa LaBracio, Aaron Hughes, and Emily Hubley. And we’re having a Q&A session immediately afterwards.

interviewed by Frankie Starbuzz, perhaps the most oddly hostile journalist on the web.
Hey bros, it’s Frankie Starbuzz here. The world’s premiere online entertainment journalist. Here’s an interview with Dan Meth that I would really love to drop on your face.
Dan Meth is responsible for most of the funny viral web cartoons you’ve seen on the world wide web. You may recall his past work “The Meth Minute” and “Nite Fite”. Or more recently his google map cartoons for CollegeHumor.com. On February 23rd, 2010 I was able to chat with Dan Meth via AOL Instant Messaging Software: the only way to do entertainment interviews.Frankie: What are you currently working on? That’s a good place to start as any other, right? Am I right?
(At this point Dan takes an awfully long time to respond. I take this moment to manually masturbate myself.)
Meth: I’m working closely with College Humor, making animated shorts for their website And also a top-secret TV project. Also I’m creating shorts for Atom.com.Frankie: What would you say the difference between those two sites are in terms of what you can do? In terms of content restrictions…
Meth: Not too much different actually. I guess the difference is that CollegeHumor has a stable of live action characters so I can sometime work with them and make stuff for their growing following of devoted fans.
Frankie: Do you have certain go to character voices over there?Meth: Yeah, well, there’s like 20 comedians within arms reach here so finding a voice is not hard.
Frankie: Have you met Sam Reich?
Meth: Hah yeah… I see him every day! I should have mentioned, these days I’m actually working AT the office.
Frankie: That’s a fancy office. (I once snuck into it via a grappling hook unit.) Is it true success has gone straight to Sam Reich’s head? I have to be honest, I heard he’s a real asshole.(Miliseconds elapsed)
Meth: I actually would completely disagree with that.
(Well, perhaps it was time for me to eat crow. But, maybe Sam Reich is paying off Dan Meth with illegal mind-altering drugs. Also, why would I eat a crow? Birds disgust me.)
Frankie: Whatever. The super top secret TV project… can you disclose ANYTHING for our readers?
Meth: Uh…I guess I can disclose… well … I’m not sure.TOP SECRET, sorry.
Frankie: Well, I guess we can continute…now that you have thoroughly devastated me.
(To be fair, Mr. Meth emailed me recently after the interview, disclosing these factoids: “Oh, and here’s all I can say about the secret project…A College Humor pilot for MTV involving live action and animation”.)
Frankie: Can you talk about Neil Young and Crazy Borscht at all?
Meth: Haha. I launched that site 56 minutes ago. You are on top of your shit.Frankie: I am the world’s premiere entertainment journalist.
Meth: It’s pretty simple: I LOVE borscht. I had never had it before. It’s not really a staple of the American diet. But, it’s delicious. Where I live there are so many restuaraunts with it.. So, I’m gonna try them all and review them… and figure out which Neil Young record is each dining experiences equivalent.
Frankie: Can I be frank? And I can, because I am Frank…ie. I’m loving it! I actually look forward to reading your reviews, perhaps I will dip my toe into the water that is BORSCHT.
Meth: EAT some. It’s like eating hemoglobin.
Frankie: Gross, bro. So, we talked about your current work with College Humor, your TV project, and your love of Borscht. What’s one thing that no one knows about Dan Meth? Make it good, because this is your final question. No pressure.
Meth: Oh fuck, I don’t know… you can tell them that among loving most music, I hold a special place for really cheezy white crooners such as Neil Diamond, Burt Bacharach, Chicago etc. I recently sang at a friends wedding. Man, I don’t know if I want that in print…
Frankie: Too late Mr. Meth! It’s far too late for you now!
And that’s Frankie Starbuzz, signing off.
Fuck you.

“Emomelon” shows up on Urban Dictionary
Maybe in a couple years it will be in Webster’s. Probably not, but a special thanks anyway to some dude known as “TheGreatFryMan” for adding it! Here’s the Emomelon cartoon in case you’ve never seen it:
Ultra-Culture Year In Review
A zine in the UK published my “Where The Wild Things” illustration in their annual movie issue… Which is cool, but I was especially psyched to see the creators of “Shaun of The Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” just a couple names above mine on the contributors list. Is England such a small country that any indie publisher can just email the top stars and ask them to write some articles for their hand-stapled zine? If only America was like that… I’d ask Nicholas Cage to do some voice-work in my next cartoon :)
Have You Guys Heard Of This New Thing Called “Twitter”?
It’s this brand-new web thing where you can type any thought you have and then pretend that other people are interested in it. Maybe I don’t really fully understand it quite yet… but if you want to “follow” my “twitter-feed” you will now be able to do so here:
http://www.twitter.com/theREALdanmeth
A cool blog from England called Platform asked me to write about five of the cartoons that I reference in my “Influences” video (see below). Click on over to read my ramblings on Joop, Dick Tracy, Brad Neely, The Neverending Story, and spaceships.
If you’re going to the King Con Comic & Animation Convention here in Brooklyn this weekend you should:
- stop by the Mammal Magazine table and say hello. I’ll be drawing strange portraits of anyone who wants one. An original caricature of YOU, drawn through the weird filter of my eye-brain for only a couple dollars.
- Attend the Animation Panel on Sunday at 6pm. I’ll be moderating a discussion about cartoons with Christy Karacas (SUPERJAIL!), Devin Clark (Comedy Central’s UGLY AMERICANS), and Rick Lacy (VENTURE BROTHERS).
Saturday and Sunday at the Brooklyn Lyceum
227 4th Ave. (R Train to Union Street)
See ya there! - Dan
